About Allies Botanicals

What is Allies Botanicals' mission?

Allies Botanicals is dedicated to supporting individuals on their journey toward personal growth and transformation through organic, ethically sourced botanical formulations. Our products are designed to support the stages of preparation, experience, integration, and long-term well-being. We believe that the relationship with plant medicine doesn't end when a ceremony closes — and we're committed to providing tools that help people continue and deepen that relationship in everyday life.

What makes Allies Botanicals unique?

We combine ancient botanical wisdom with rigorous modern manufacturing standards to create formulations that are both deeply intentional and clinically credible. Our products were developed by a licensed acupuncturist and master herbalist with 30+ years of experience supporting people through psychedelic experiences. Every formula is crafted with a specific phase of the journey in mind — not as a generic wellness supplement, but as a purposeful plant ally for each stage of the process.

Who is behind the formulations?

The Journey Collection was formulated by Ben Zappin, licensed acupuncturist and master herbalist with over 30 years of experience. Trained under foundational figures of the modern herbal medicine movement in Santa Cruz, California, Ben has spent 25+ years supporting people through psychedelic experiences — preparation, difficult moments, integration, and long-term recovery — using Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and botanical formulas. Our products are manufactured in an FDA-registered, third-party GMP certified facility.

The Journey Collection

What is the Journey Collection?

The Journey Collection is a set of four botanical tinctures — Centering, Grounding, Integrating, and Sustaining — each designed to support a specific phase of the psychedelic journey. Together they form a complete arc: preparing the mind and body, supporting acute transitions, integrating what was experienced, and cultivating ongoing joy and connection. Each tincture can also be used independently of a psychedelic experience as a daily wellness ally.

What does each tincture do?

Centering — Preparation. Calms the mind, opens the heart, and supports liver and digestive cleansing in the days leading up to a journey. Key plants include holy basil, rose, yarrow, mugwort, burdock, and dandelion. Also a beautiful daily ally for anxiety, mental clarity, and general nervous system support.

Grounding — Landing. The fast-acting formula for acute transitions — during or after a journey, or any moment you need to come back to earth quickly. Key plants include California poppy, wood betony, kava, rose, passionflower, and blue vervain. Also effective for panic, racing thoughts, difficulty sleeping, and everyday overwhelm.

Integrating — Return. The bridge from the depths of an experience back into daily life. Quiets the mind without heavy sedation, steadies emotions, and opens access to joy in the days following a journey. Key plants include passionflower, skullcap, blue vervain, silk tree (Albizia), cacao, and reishi.

Sustaining — Flourishing. A heart-opening, joy-inviting formula for the ongoing cultivation of lightness, connection, and play. Key plants include hawthorn, damiana, ashwagandha, rose, cacao, cinnamon, and cardamom. Works beautifully for post-journey joy cultivation, social settings, and as a daily tonic for anyone seeking more warmth and aliveness in their life.

Do I need to be doing a psychedelic journey to use these products?

No. While the formulas are designed around the arc of a psychedelic experience, each tincture has meaningful standalone applications. Centering supports daily clarity and nervous system calm. Grounding is useful for panic, overwhelm, or difficulty sleeping. Integrating helps with emotional steadiness and access to joy. Sustaining nourishes the heart and invites play. Many people use one or more tinctures as part of an ongoing daily practice entirely independent of ceremony.

Choosing the Right Product

How do I choose the right tincture?

Start with where you are in your process. If you're preparing for an experience, begin with Centering one to two weeks before. After a journey, move to Grounding for immediate transitions and Integrating for the days that follow. Sustaining is for the longer arc — ongoing joy, connection, and heart-opening. If you're not in an active journey cycle, trust your intuition about which phase of life you're in and start there.

What's the difference between Centering and Integrating?

Centering is going in — descending into the unknown, preparing the mind and heart for depth and transformation. Integrating is coming back out — re-entering daily life, processing what was experienced, finding steadiness after the depths. Before a journey: Centering. After: Integrating. For daily use without a journey context, Centering tends toward clarity and calm while Integrating tends toward emotional steadiness and access to joy. If you're unsure, ask yourself: am I preparing for something, or am I processing something?

Can I use more than one tincture at a time?

Yes. The four tinctures are designed to work together across a journey arc, and there is no contraindication to using multiple formulas. Many people use Centering daily in a preparation phase while keeping Grounding on hand for acute moments, then transition to Integrating and Sustaining in the days following an experience.

How to Use

How should I take these tinctures?

Drop directly into the mouth and taste the medicine — building a sensory relationship with what you're taking adds meaning and presence to the practice. If the taste is challenging, mix into a small amount of hot or cold water, tea, honey water, or ceremonial cacao. Juice works too. Strictly sublingual application (holding under the tongue) is not the recommended protocol.

What is the serving size?

Each bottle contains approximately 17 servings. A serving is 1–3 droppers taken 2–3 times daily. At the higher end of that range, a bottle lasts under a week. At a lower dose — or if you respond strongly to less — it stretches considerably further. One to two weeks is a reasonable general guideline, but how long a bottle lasts is personal.

How long does one kit last for a full journey cycle?

Roughly one to two weeks per tincture depending on dose and individual response. A full kit used across a complete journey arc — one to two weeks of preparation, plus integration — may span four to six weeks in total, with different tinctures being used more heavily at different phases.

Can these be mixed into hot or cold beverages?

Yes — all four tinctures mix well into hot or cold water, tea, honey water, or ceremonial cacao. Heat does not degrade the formula.

Are these products organic?

Yes. Ingredients are either certified organic, sourced from trusted long-term farm partners with whom Five Flavors Herbs has worked for 15–20 years, or wild harvested. The products are not currently brand-certified organic — not because the ingredients don't meet that standard, but because pursuing certification takes time and paperwork the team chose to skip in order to bring the products to market. Most if not all ingredients would qualify for certification. Where an ingredient is not certified organic, it is typically wild harvested.

Are the products vegan and cruelty-free?

Yes. All Allies Botanicals products are vegan and cruelty-free.

What about the alcohol content?

Each tincture contains 14–24% organic cane alcohol, used as both a preservative and an extraction medium. At the serving sizes indicated, multiple servings contain less ethanol than a ripe banana, a day-old bagel, or bread that has been sitting on the counter. The liver is well-equipped to process ethanol at this volume. For people in alcohol recovery who practice an abundance of caution, we recommend transparency — this may not be the right product for them. Placing the dose in hot water will evaporate some of the alcohol, though not all of it.

What is vegetable glycerin and is it safe for people with blood sugar concerns?

Vegetable glycerin is a natural plant-derived compound used in tincture formulation. The glycerin in these formulas is not glycemic — it will not affect blood sugar levels. It is safe for pre-diabetic and blood sugar-conscious individuals.

Manufacturing & Quality

Where are the products manufactured?

All Allies Botanicals products are manufactured in Nevada City, California in an FDA-registered and inspected facility. Ben Zappin, our lead formulator, remains a hands-on presence throughout the manufacturing process.

What does GMP certification mean?

GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practices — a set of federal standards (21 CFR 111) that govern how dietary supplements are produced. Our facility is third-party GMP certified, meaning an independent auditor completed a two-day inspection and validated compliance with those standards. This covers raw material documentation, batch record keeping, extraction consistency, adverse event reporting, and chain of custody tracking. It is not a self-declaration — it is an independently verified certification.

What sets your manufacturing apart from other tincture brands?

Several things. First, clinical depth: our manufacturing is led by licensed practitioners with 30+ years of experience — not simply trained herbalists or hired researchers. Second, scale: we operate at a boutique scale that allows more discerning sourcing decisions than high-volume manufacturers. Third, continuity: the same team has been in place since day one, which means institutional knowledge and quality standards are embedded in the culture.

What lab testing do you perform?

Every batch is third-party tested for heavy metals and microbial contaminants. Heavy metal levels are verified to be below California Prop 65 thresholds — the most rigorous standard in the United States, stricter than both FDA and EU levels. Internal certificates of analysis are generated for each batch for our own quality records. If you have specific questions about our testing protocols, reach out to us at community@alliesbotanicals.com.

Safety & Suitability

Are these products safe to use?

Yes, when used as directed. Our formulas are made from natural, organic botanical ingredients and are generally well-tolerated. We recommend starting with a lower dose, particularly if you are new to herbal tinctures, and monitoring how your body responds. If you experience any adverse effects, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.

Do these products contain psychedelics or controlled substances?

No. Allies Botanicals products contain no psychedelic substances or controlled ingredients. All formulations are made exclusively from legally approved botanicals that are safe and compliant with federal and state regulations.

Can these products be used alongside a psychedelic experience?

Yes — that is precisely what they are designed for. The formulas contain no psychedelics themselves and are intended to support the body and mind before, during acute transitions, and after a psychedelic experience. As always, if you have specific health concerns, consult with a knowledgeable provider.

How do these products fit into a guided journey or retreat program?

If you are working with a facilitator, guide, or retreat center, we always recommend following their preparation and dieta protocols and checking with your provider about any potential contraindications. These formulas are designed to be supportive companions for both preparation and post-journey integration, and a knowledgeable provider can help you incorporate them appropriately.

Who should consult a healthcare provider before using?

We recommend consulting a healthcare provider — preferably one who is integrative medicine or psychedelic-literate — if you are taking any prescription medications, have a history of mental health concerns, are pregnant or nursing, or have any pre-existing health conditions. Herbal formulas can interact with medications, and individual circumstances vary. These products are designed for adults.

Can I use these products with other supplements or medications?

While our products are generally well-tolerated, they can interact with other supplements or medications. We recommend consulting with a healthcare provider before combining our products with other treatments to ensure there are no adverse interactions.

Shelf Life & Storage

How long do these products last?

Allies Botanicals tinctures carry an internal retest date of five years from the date of manufacture. This is not an expiration date — it is the point at which we would evaluate the product to determine whether to continue selling it. The date printed on the box is the assembly and kitting date. Properly stored, the medicinal quality of these formulas will remain active well within that window.

How should I store my tinctures?

Store below 70°F, away from direct light and heat. Light and heat are the primary factors that degrade tincture quality over time. A cool, dark cabinet or drawer is ideal.

Are they still good once opened?

Yes. The organic cane alcohol in the formula acts as a natural preservative and inhibits mold and microbial growth. Keep the cap firmly closed to minimize evaporation, and the formula will remain stable and effective.

Legal & Compliance

Are your products FDA-approved?

Dietary supplements are not required to receive FDA approval before going to market. However, Allies Botanicals products are manufactured in full compliance with FDA regulations for dietary supplements, including good manufacturing practice standards (21 CFR 111). Our formulations, labeling, and marketing are regularly reviewed to ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations.

Are there legal restrictions on purchasing these products?

Our products are formulated with legally approved botanical ingredients and are available for purchase throughout the United States. Customers outside the US are encouraged to check their local import regulations before ordering. If you have questions, reach out to us at community@alliesbotanicals.com.
